College Criminal Justice Programs Prepare You for the Exciting Field of Law Enforcement!

Law enforcement offers a wide variety of options for those who want a career that makes a real difference.  Do you see yourself running down criminals?  Solving the mysteries behind a crime? Running for sheriff in a small town?  Or perhaps you envision yourself wearing one of those black jackets with “FBI” emblazoned on the back.

College criminal justice programs are an important factor in preparing you for careers like these, among many others.  But each career may call for a different focus in your education.  How do you choose the right program for you?

Aspiring Police Officers…

Some police academies don’t require a degree to begin training, but almost all emphasize continuing education.  And having a degree in a criminal justice related field can be a fantastic asset when you’ve graduated the academy and are hunting for jobs.  Degrees usually mean a higher salary as well.

When choosing a program, think of where you want your career to be in five years.  What aspects of criminal justice interest you the most?  Choose a major from college criminal justice programs that focuses on these, and you’ll facilitate working your way up while you’re on the force.

Detectives and Private Investigators

Many times, within a police force, having a degree from college criminal justice programs can help you be promoted to detective–or, being hired as a detective right away.  If you’re more interested in starting a career as a PI, you may find that taking classes which teach you the methods and theories of investigation are a great way to prepare yourself.

Working in a Federal Agency

If working for the FBI or the Department of Homeland Security appeals to you, know that you’ll need a four year degree–and one that’s been earned through college criminal justice programs will be perfect.
