Correctional Officer Training

Correctional officers are the ones in charge in maintaining peace and order inside the prison house. They oversee those who have been arrested or those who are awaiting trial because they were convicted of a crime and sentenced to serve their time in a penitentiary, jail or reformatory.

But before one can become a correctional officer, correctional officer training must be done first. Most correctional officer training happens through on-the-job training. The Federal Bureau of Prison needs those who are in entry-level to have at least a Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of full-time experience in a field providing counseling, assistance or supervision to individuals. Federal, State and some local departments of corrections do the correctional officer training supported by the guidelines made by the American Correctional Association and the American Jail Association. They will be trained with firearms proficiency and self-defense skills. The training can be completed within several weeks or months in an actual job setting but of course under the supervision by an experienced officer.
