Within the Field of Criminal Justice: 4 Main Career Divisions
Because the field of criminal justice contains so many different career options, there are 4 main divisions that are usually recognized, to simplify matters. Criminal justice schools offer a variety of programs designed to give candidates the fundamentals they need to succeed in one or more of each of these divisions.
Corrections
At first glance, the Corrections field may not seem to offer many options for those seeking a career in criminal justice. Of course, there are the first choices that come to mind–correctional officers and administrators. But there are a plethora of other careers in the correctional system as well. Treatment and counseling specialists, for example.
Law Enforcement
Perhaps the first career field that comes to mind when we think of criminal justice: Law enforcement. Those looking to make their way in law enforcement careers can find many educational programs at criminal justice schools that can prepare them for this rigorous and competitive field.
Legal and Legislative
Although we think of the legal field as being primarily populated by law school graduates, a criminal justice background is essential and advantageous for certain other aspects of both the legal and legislative fields.
Scientific
The popularity of television programs and movies about some of the scientific aspects of criminal justice, from forensics to DNA, may have whetted the public’s interest, but it takes rigorous study at criminal justice schools to land one of these highly technical careers!
